A Masterclass in Poetry for P7 Room 20 Mr Hawkins' Class

5th Nov 2025

Holy Cross Boys’ P7 Transfer Boys were treated to a poetry class from Gerry Kelly. Gerry the author of ‘Inside and Out’ took time out of his busy schedule to help prepare the boys for the poetry section of the Transfer Test. We are extremely thankful to Gerry for taking the time to give time!

Here are the four key themes from Dear John;

1. A Sad Goodbye in Unusual Surroundings: The poem paints a poignant picture of someone visiting their partner in a visiting room—like a jail visit—to hear some heartbreaking news.

2. The Power of Silence: The partner’s long pause creates a tense, dramatic moment before they quietly reveal that their relationship is over.

3. Pain and Healing: The breakup was deeply traumatic for the speaker, who admits to not handling it well at the time.

4. Reflection and Growth: Looking back, the speaker feels a sense of relief. What once seemed overwhelming now appears melodramatic, showing that healing has taken place.

After multiple readings, the boys engaged in a lively discussion, guided by thoughtful questions from Gerry. These questions fostered understanding, emotional insight, and critical thinking.  Gerry was inspired by the philosophical insights from the boys and said, ‘I wished I had have talked to these boys before writing the ‘Dear John Poem!’ - it would have been much better.’
